Rural Tree Planting Program
Haldimand Stewardship Council's Rural Tree Planting Program assists with increasing forest cover by making tree planting easier and more affordable for property owners in Haldimand County.
Haldimand Stewardship Council is a Partner Delivery Agent of the Forest Ontario 50 Million Tree Program and works to provide landowners access to affordable and professional tree planting. Other sources of funding include support from Environment & Climate Change Canada and the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change.
Support to landowners includes site inspections, tree planting prescriptions, seedling orders, site preparation, tree planting and tending treatments. Project success is achieved through planting inspections, plant quality surveys and survival surveys in the first and second years.
Criteria for program eligibility may be modified somewhat from those listed below where there is sound ecological justification; however in general, the following criteria will be met:
Planting area is 2.5 acres (1 ha) or greater with minimum density of 600 trees/ac (1500/ha);
Plant source is appropriate native stock and;
Landowners contribute on average $1500 and sign a 15-year agreement to protect the planted trees and use sustainable forestry practices.
